Lernziele / Kompetenzen
  • Learning about key art historical and theoretical positions from the 20th and 21st century concerned with the relationship between art and politics.
  • Conducting case studies to compare different artistic strategies of ‘doing’ politics, while building reading, writing and discussion skills.
  • Sharpening students’ own definition of the political and how it plays out in their work.
InhalteThis module maps different notions, strategies, and sites of the political in art: from ‘unexceptional politics’ (Emily Apter) and institutional critique, to the guerrilla tactics of ‘artivism’ (Tania Bruguera) and protest action. We will explore this spectrum through readings and discussions, an excursion and screening as well as group work on art-historical case studies from the 20th to the present; at stake are terms of the private and public, democracy and participation, collaboration and group relations, performance and justice. Throughout, we will interrogate the crux of art’s ‘autonomy’ and the relationship between theoretical work and material practices, including the students’ own work.

Meret Kaufmann (*1989) studied art history and theatre studies at Freie Universität Berlin and University College London, where she is currently working on her doctorate. She works across research, teaching, writing and exhibition making in various institutions and projects.
