Inhalte | Technology and art have a long and fruitful history, from the foundation of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), a collaboration between the engineers of Bell Labs and artists, including Robert Rauschenberg, to today, when artists have access to an unprecedented number of tech-based resources, from blockchain, to AI, to the internet as a medium itself. This course aims to decode the various technology-based platforms, starting in 1994 with the foundation of net.art through artists including Jodi.org and Olia Lialina, going on to examine the post-internet based practices of Amalia Ulman, Jon Rafman, Simon Denny, and the DIS Collective among many others. We will look into the archives of Rhizome, the platform dedicated to net art hosted by the New Museum. Gaming, world-building, and the opportunities offered by both human and AI-based platforms are becoming increasingly important: here, Cao Fei’s RMB City and Ian Cheng’s Emissaries series, as well as works by Cory Arcangel will be examined. Technology as a site of utopia forms another aspect of this discussion, with the queering of the space by collectives such as The Institute of Queer Ecology. We will conclude with a discussion of the risks, opportunities, and issues with the current emergence of mass artificial-intelligence driven platforms such as MidJourney and ChatGPT 4. Dr. Jeni Fulton (*1981) is the Head of Editorial at Art Basel, leading editorial production – essays, interviews, short films and social media. She is the catalogue editor for the Art Market Report, an industry-leading bi-annual publication published in collaboration with Arts Economics and UBS. She holds a PhD on the topic of Value and Evaluation in Contemporary Art, which examined the relationship between art criticism, art writing, and the art market since the 2000s. |
