| Inhalte | Painting is the great zombie among the art genres. It has been declared dead many times, but each time it has returned from the grave alive and well. It was often dismissed as a capitalist fetish, but time and again it was revived as a medium of critique and dissent. It was declared an expression of Western "ocularcentrism," i.e. the privileging of vision, but today it is taken for granted that painting participates in multi- and transmedial experiments. Against this background, the seminar will examine the history and theory, but also the materials and techniques of painting from the early modern period to the present. We will trace the diverse developments of the genre from princely commissions to the "l'art pour l'art" of the 19th century to the excesses of contemporary art markets, post-canvas painting, and digital painting. Inputs and discussions will be accompanied by visits to art galleries and/or museums. Jörg Scheller (*1979) is professor of art history and permanent guest professor at the Poznan University of the Arts, Poland. His essays are regularly published a.o. in DIE ZEIT, NZZ, frieze magazine, Camera Austria.
