InhalteClassical ballet still serves as a reference point for many Western dance education institutions. Recent complaints at almost all classical ballet academies in Western Europe about the emotional and physical abuse of the students have strongly discredited the role of ballet in dance education. That’s why we put the question on the dancefloor: Ballet - why and how?

In the course, we trace together the origins of classical ballet up to the point when it partially transformed into the aesthetics of Punk Ballet (Clark/Armitage), Ballet Drag (Les Ballets Trockadero) or Fat Ballet and technically into Ballet Slang (Forsythe), Release Ballet (Rizzi) or Ballet for Contemporary Dancers (Panetta). As a group we will develop together an inventory of the intrinsic aesthetical and technical definitions of classical ballet and discuss how those aesthetics and definitions can be practiced in a changing professional world in which diverse is the new normal. This inventory will be discussed further with a bigger audience in a shared studio talk at the end of the course.
