Inhalte | “Listening implies a preparedness to meet the unpredictable and unplanned, to welcome the unwelcome.” – Hildegard Westerkamp Sound, Object, Action will introduce students to a number of different approaches to sound art and investigate how they can incorporate experimental audio and electronic media into their own work. We will consider some of the historic foundations of sound and media art and touch on research areas associated with these themes. Through a practical engagement with sound and technology students will experiment with field recording, microphone building, DIY electronics, environmental listening, performance and sonic sculptural practices. Participants will be encouraged to engage creatively and critically with sound and music and its related technologies. The workshop will culminate with a collaborative performance-installation formed by collective making and intermedia thinking. 'Sound Art' is a term often used to describe artwork where sound is the primary focus. However, it is a contentious phrase some artists, critics and curators have resisted. Despite this friction, Sound Art can be a useful way to interpret a heterogeneous set of practices and aesthetics. It distinguishes itself from music, though it is arguable how rigorous this distinction is. Sound Art can also be a helpful way to plot a progression of the use of sound in the arts across the 20th Century. During the ‘sonic turn’, a movement in the mid 1990’s, we find a larger cultural shift with an emphasis on sound more generally, this is evident with emergent fields such as sound studies, sonic architecture and sound anthropology growing within academic institutions around the world. At this time a number of significant galleries (e.g. Hayward Gallery, Tate & MACBA) presented exhibitions with an emphasis on sound and listening. --- Tim Shaw is an artist working with sound, light and communication media. Presenting work through performances, installations and sound walks, Tim is interested in how affective environments can be constructed or explored using a diverse range of techniques and technologies. Working with field recordings, electronics, video, synthesis, sound objects, self-made hardware and DIY software his practice creatively appropriates communication technologies to explore how these devices change the way we experience the world. He presents work in galleries, forests, warehouses, caves, public spaces, festivals, museums, through residencies and cultural events both nationally and internationally. He is a Lecturer in Digital Media at Newcastle University, co-curator of the Walking Festival of Sound and Research Associate at ZHdK. https://tim-shaw.net https://wfos.net/ |
