Inhalte | In the first part of the seminar, the participants will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of possibilities for working with ceramics. From drawing on ceramic surfaces to creating intricate relief sculptures and fully realized three-dimensional pieces, students will be encouraged to experiment and push the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional objects. During the second part, dedicated to glazing techniques, participants will further delve into the material by exploring the transformative power of surface treatments in ceramics. The practical parts will be punctuated by insight into the aesthetic category of the grotesque body. Students will delve into its historical significance and role in challenging conventional notions of beauty. By examining the works of renowned artists and engaging in discussions, participants will gain an understanding of the grotesque body as a means of artistic expression and social commentary. The grotesque is a mode of artistic expression that revels in the interplay between opposites, blurring the boundaries between high and low, sacred and profane, beautiful and ugly. In the realm of ceramics, the grotesque finds a fertile ground for exploration, as the malleability of clay allows artists to create figures that challenge established norms and expectations. However, ceramic, as a material, carries a strong association with domesticity and craft, often evoking a sense of familiarity and comfort that might easily lead to an overemphasis on cuteness and illustrative aspects. Therefore, a primary goal of this seminar is to address these inherent risks, encouraging participants to push beyond the boundaries of the expected and explore the transformative potential of ceramics. About the lecturer: Nicola Genovese (b. 1971 Venice IT, Living and working between Zürich and Turin) is an artist, co-curator of the off-site exhibition project Hrürze Gegi and part of the Mid-level Academic Staff at the Department of Fine Arts at ZHdK.
