Inhalte | In this seminar, we will be discussing the politics of narrative re-framing of the present. In broad terms, questioning the common ground of social justice movements from Black Life Matters to climate justice internationalism. We are departing from the premise that the rise of “myth” in contemporary politics needs to be understood in a broader framework of colonial modernity and racial capitalism, and that the mythological and cosmological codes activated in the present cannot be grasped without tackling the theological origin myths of modernity. What are the anthropological assumptions about human world-making that inform the recourse or foreclosures to mythology and cosmology both in reactionary and abolitionist politics today. How are these propositions to be meaningfully distinguished? How do we grapple with the framing of social struggles in media practices that feed into an aspirational politic of representation without shifting policy nor the foundational assumptions of racial capitalism and colonial mythology? From the rise of a the “persecuting society” in Europe in the 11th century to the Black Life Matters movement and the anti-genre of the “black fantastic”, we will put to the test what it means to describe colonial modernity in cosmological terms. |
