Inhalte | This course aims to study systematically the evolution of the concerto (a musical genre) in correlation with modifications of the orchestra (a social-cultural institution) in order to better understand their transformative potential and their role in European culture. Among the main topics to be discussed are the origins of the instrumental concerto; changes in the soloist-orchestra relationship and the role of the orchestra for concerto models formation; distinctive features of the “concerto orchestra” that differentiate it from “other” orchestras; the impact of changing approaches to timbre on the concerto’s orchestration. Though the course focuses on the concertos of Corelli, Torelli, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Bartók, Carter, Tippett, Ligeti, etc. we will also study concertos of lesser-known composers who established important traditions in the concerto’s orchestration. The students will encounter the interaction between the evolution of the concerto and the development of the orchestra as an unstopped process, and they will get to know a number of different concertos and develop the analytical competence to read concerto scores in order to incorporate this knowledge in their own performing practices. This course will be held in English. |
