InhaltePerformance and the moving image have an enduring relationship, which is often full of tension. How are these two mediums interdependent, and how are they inherently different? On the one hand, performance only exists beyond the ephemeral moment if it is captured by a camera. On the other hand, the camera inevitably re-frames the live event into an infinitely repeatable medium. What are the implications of this relationship – representationally, formally, politically? The aim of this workshop is to engage in an expanding field of performance art, which is increasingly relevant to contemporary visual art. We will explore these questions through study, with an emphasis on practice. This workshop – partly co-conducted by artist Tosh Basco – will be a series of group activities, discussion, and individual assignments.

The module is designed to be suitable for students who have already taken modules with Wu Tsang.

Wu Tsang (*1982) is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist who combines documentary and narrative techniques in works that explore hidden histories, marginalized narratives, and the act of performing itself.
