Inhalte | The meme – a sort of cultural gene – replicates and circulates through subtle transformation and radical recontextualization, in all directions at once. It has no centre, rarely any discernible beginning, certainly no ending, it corrupts, grows old and seems to die, but is merely forgotten, often re-emerges only to transmit a wholly other ideology, author a newly articulated vibe, or signal a nostalgic return. Like any technology, it also represents a mode of subjectivity, and while memes mostly exist in the small rectangular frames we hold in our hands, they beg the question - how much are they choreographing us, what would it be to express the embodiment of memes, not only their quick-format punchlines and masteries of WTF, but the dynamics in which they circulate, the affects which they transmit, the ways they make our bodies feel. In this week-long workshop, we’ll look at some of these questions inside out and develop physical practices to test out and play with them. The practices will be largely physical but do not require any particular dance training and students from all disciplinary backgrounds who are curious to dive into this bizarre world, are warmly welcome. The week will conclude with a showing of some material from our process. |

Bemerkung | Andros Zins-Browne (b. 1981, New York City) is an artist working at the intersection of performance and dance. His work extends choreographic notions to interact with dancers, non-dancers, singers, objects, and texts. Central to these pursuits is the exploration of the body as both material and immaterial, a site of exchange between embodied images and somatic experience. His works include Already Unmade—an unmaking of his own choreographic archive— at the ICA, London; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai; and Fondation Galeries Lafayette, Paris. Over the past several years, he has created several remixes of existing works: Jérôme Bel, 1995 (commissioned by e-Flux and KADIST Foundation); See-Saw by choreographer Simone Forti (the Museum of Modern Art, New York); and The Tony Cokes Remixes (10th Berlin Biennial). In collaboration with Karthik Pandian, Atlas Unlimited, a series of exhibitions weaving together migratory movement, destruction, and re-construction through sculpture and vocal performance was featured at the PERFORMA19 Performance Biennial, New York. In 2022, he premiered color a body who flees, a sound installation with live performances for the group show, LIFES (Hammer Museum, Los Angeles). Zins-Browne is the recipient of grants and awards from the Goethe Institute, the Flemish Cultural Ministry, New York State Council for the Arts, and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. He is currently artist in residence at Danspace Project New York. |
