Documenta fifteen – or "lumbung one", as ruangrupa calls it – came to an end in September 2022. However, the idea of the rice barn "lumbung" and the various alternative approaches continue to have an impact on artistic, education and curatorial practices. What can we (un)learn from "lumbung one"? How can these approaches be translated into our own mediation practice? We would like to discuss these and further questions in collaboration with staff members of Kunsthalle Zurich.
The starting point of the seminar is the experience gained by Chiara Giardi and Desirée Hieronimus when they worked as sobat-sobat at documenta fifteen alongside their studies in the Master Art Education, Curatorial Studies. sobat-sobat (sing. sobat) means *~ friends/companions in Bahasa Indonesia, but it was also the name given to the art educators working for the education department at documenta fifteen (May–September 2022).
During this seminar, they will share their experience as sobat-sobat and together, we aim to compost knowledge and practices rooted in friendship and collectivity in art education. We will start by delving deep into the practice of lumbung as Desirée and Chiara lived and interpreted it for their work as sobat-sobat. During documenta fifteen, the sobat-sobat developed strategies of resistance in light of their experience. For example, they developed slogans like “ever been friend-zoned by an institution?” to critically reflect on their role as ’friends’ of the public in such an exhibition; they hacked their own workwear via screen printing to raise awareness about their working conditions; and founded a group for meme-based harvesting. Throughout the course, we will build on these strategies. We will harvest (~ document and reflect on processes in a very personal, partial, and creative way) our meetings and celebrate it in an open majelis (~ assembly) for art educators.
Moreover, we will practice nongkrong (~ chilling out together) to informally exchange first-hand experiences about our practices and combine this with literature on collectivity in Art Education. From there, we will explore together what could be learnt and possibly speculate and test, on a small scale and experimental way, how to apply and modify similar strategies of resistance to other institutions and contexts. We will invite other art education collectives into the discussion, investigating their practices while seeking a local anchor, both in the city of Zürich and in your/our own personal, educational and professional backgrounds.
