InhalteCan conscious listening spark radical change?

Under the umbrella of “The Witness”, an initiative founded by the performer and curator Julie Beauvais, www.thewitness.earth, transdisciplinary satellite groups of artists, scientists, and activists, in collaboration with their local communities, are listening to our imperiled planet’s messages around potential collapse – or hope for rehabilitation. Their research, which incorporates audio, video, text, and other creative platforms, implores us to witness what may disappear forever, as well as build, with great urgency, new networks of caregiving for the earth. The Witness shares this research through an online platform that highlights the relationship between humans and our non-human kin.

In the lab and the associated project week, we build one of these satellite groups and develop community-based listening projects in Zurich. Students are asked to organize and articulate their work in the same structure as the other groups based in North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, East Asia, with a focus on community-based and deep listening research, field work and recording and the themes of major transitions that societies are currently experiencing at the global and local levels. During the process, students are invited to participate in online discussions with practitioners from around the world who combine art, performance, and forms of cultural, ecological, social, spiritual activism.

The development of the research is guided and mentored by the faculty, namely Julie Beauvais. The course includes introductions into the practice of Deep Listening, developed by the American experimental musician and activist Pauline Oliveros, offers some tools for field recordings as well as a series of artistic experiments.

Results, the process and the sum of the documentation produced during the semester can be presented at the end of the 2023 edition of The Witness, when a gathering of all participating groups will take place at events in Bern, Basel and Zurich.
