Through a daily structure that includes input sessions, tasks & exercises, readings, sharing rounds and discussions, participants are invited to work in and around the old thermal bad premises. Employing skills they are familiar with or experimenting with new tools, they will move through disciplines and fields and will work individually and/or in groups. Kathrin Doppler and Eirini Sourgiadaki will function as facilitators, accompanying participants by providing individual mentoring, assistance in framing, formulating and realizing the final artifacts. The week will lead to a 1-month public show, following the wish to establish an art & mediation public space next to- and with- the Bagno Popolare Verein, that was initiated by the public whow “Vom Baden Lernen”, realized in Spring 2021 by Mirko Winkel, Irene Vögeli and Jana Thierfelder (ZHdK, DKV, MA Transdisziplinarität). This term’s exhibition will be a collaboration with the Seminar for Media Science of the Department Art, Media and Philosophy of University of Basel (https://dkmp.philhist.unibas.ch/de/) led by media scientist David Bucheli and the Verein für Wissenskultur science+fiction. Since 2016, the interdisciplinary team behind science+fiction has been bringing the sciences, the arts, and an interested public into dialogue about social issues at the intersection of academic research and political action.
Inhalte„The function of the Baths is to create and recycle private and public fantasies, to invent, test, and possibly introduce new forms of behavior“

In this project-week, we will depart from the history of public baths and their evolving context, from the roman empire to contemporary exclusive spas, as well as historical examples of restricted access to water in the urban environment. Baden will function as our base to explore further relationships to the fluid element, but we will also try to become familiar with similar settings in other cities, as well as with therapeutic properties and scientific experiments.
We will try to navigate from the privatization and profit-oriented policies to open-access and inclusion through sharing and communal practices, from therapeutic properties translated into monetary values to the ineffable of “what the water gave us” (to paraphrase Florence and the Machine and Federico Campagna).
