Lernziele / Kompetenzen
  • Knowing key terms and debates in art, culture and media theory as well as in philosophy and aesthetics
  • Placing art theories and practices within historical and socio-political contexts
  • Using theory as a tool in students’ own and with view to other artistic practices.
InhalteThe module provides an introduction to key theoretical terms and art historical discourses that are relevant to the field of contemporary art. Through specific case studies that span from the early 20th century to the present, the course sheds light on the intersections between art, philosophy, politics and society as well as new media and technological conditions.

The module is structured along a set of key terms and involves close looking, reading, writing and debating as well as mini-lectures and excursions. The course contents reflect the research focus of the tutor while investigating connections and tensions between different theories and practices, past and present.


Meret Kaufmann (*1989) studied art history and theatre studies at Freie Universität Berlin and University College London, where she is currently working on her doctorate. Meret works across research, teaching, writing and exhibition making in various institutions and projects.

Gabrielle Schaad (*1982) is an art historian (PhD), freelance art critic and research associate in the BA Fine Arts at the ZHdK. Her research concerns representational criticism, transcultural movements and performative practices between art, architecture and technology. She has taught theory of architecture at the ETH Zurich and the Technical University Munich and worked as curatorial assistant at Art Museum Lucerne and Kunsthaus Zurich.
