  • Writing a first artist statement
InhalteArtists are not self-contained, autonomous individuals. The social conditions and interdependencies produced different types of artists at different times. We will take a closer look at these changing movements, which determine the image of the artist invisibly, as it were. The seminar deals with the image of the artist.

The focus is on the verbal expressions of artists. Which image do they create of themselves? How do we weight such statements? And above all: What is the relationship between such statements and the work? Which social ideals and narratives influence these self-expressions? In addition, we discuss how the participants understand themselves as artists.

Mareike Dittmer (*1978) studied cultural and communication sciences at the UdK Berlin and was involved with frieze magazine for almost 20 years, as co-founder and co-publisher of frieze d/e and later as associate publisher of frieze. Jeni Fulton (*1981) is the Head of Editorial at Art Basel, leading editorial production – essays, interviews, short films and social media. She is the catalogue editor for the Art Market Report, an industry-leading bi-annual publication published in collaboration with Arts Economics and UBS.
