(E) Knowledge of the issues and methods of "sensory ethnography", as well as an examination of artistic and theoretical positions relevant to the subject area. — Trying out ethnographic methods in the field, as well as the ability to develop a question and a suitable research procedure for one's own artistic work.— Research habitus, willingness to link artistic, ethnographic and research practice, reflexivity in dealing with ethnographic and artistic research methods. |
«The artist as anthropologist» (Joseph Kosuth) oder «The artist as ethnographer» (Hal Foster) lauten Statements bereits gegen Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts. (E) Artistic and ethnographic processes have increasingly come into a mirrored relationship in recent times. "The artist as anthropologist" (Joseph Kosuth) or "The artist as ethnographer" (Hal Foster) were statements already made towards the end of the last century. In more recent practices, methods of ethnology or social anthropology are increasingly taken up in artistic works; in particular, the involvement of artists in social contexts and the roles they assume in them are negotiated. Conversely, ethnology and social anthropology increasingly bring aesthetic aspects into play and give more space to sensual experience and cognition as well as aesthetic media such as images, moving images, sound or (cultural) performances. In documentary or interventional forms, there are also mixed forms that are received in both fields, examples being Jean Rouch's Cinéma vérité, the "Smell archive" by the artist Sissel Tolaas, as well as the dialogical montage of Steve Feld's "acoustemology" or the works of Véréna Paravel from the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard University. The practically oriented Lab looks at strategies and tactics of "sensory ethnography" and asks how procedures from visual ethnography, sound anthropology and anthropology of performance can be applied to one's own concerns or transferred into artistic practices. We analyse and discuss works and projects from such fields, but the focus is on joint exercises and individual works by students who see potential in these relations. |
