The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Anmials». (E) Charles Darwin's study "On the Origin of Species", first published in 1859 (and immediately sold out), is one of the most influential works in Western cultural history, far beyond the discipline of biology, to which Darwin ascribed himself. Contrary to what the title, especially of the German translation, "Die Entstehung der Arten", might suggest, however, the book is as much about the origin as it is about the abolition of species, or more generally: about the questioning of demarcations between seemingly given categorisations. Darwin introduces a historical, perhaps even genealogical perspective to "nature". This also brings into focus the demarcations between biologism and culturalism or between nature and culture, which seem to be highly topical at the present time and against the background of the Sixth Mass Extinction. In the seminar, we want to venture a reading of the book and in doing so also ask the question of how access can be found to a text that comes from a completely differently configured time. In doing so, we will consult other texts by Darwin, such as the travelogues of his circumnavigation of the world on HMS Beagle, in which the Russian lyricist Ossip Mandelstam observed a "remarkable prosaism" (in addition to "good scientific weather"), or Darwin's richly illustrated study "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Anmials". We trace Darwin's influences, such as the transfer of biological principles to social structures, which had devastating consequences in Social Darwinism - which has little to do with Darwin himself (which is also reflected in the fact that the full title, "The Origin of Species by Natural Selection", is usually shortened). We relate the book to current reactions and further developments, for example, to the elaboration of a genealogical perspective in a double reading with Michel Foucault (Philipp Sarasin), to Darwin-oriented works in art history and aesthetics (Horst Bredekamp, Winfried Menninghaus) or to nature-cultural discourses, for example in Lynn Margulis ("Symbiotic Planet"), Jane Bennett ("Vibrant Matter") or Donna Haraway ("Companion Species Manifesto"), who refer to Darwin in individual contributions. Finally, we want to turn our attention to medial dimensions in Darwin's works and ask how language and image relate to various forms of knowledge. |
