InhalteNigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said in her lecture 'The Danger of a Single Story': “When we reject the single story, when we realize that there is never a single story about any place, we regain a kind of paradise”. In the six-week seminar ‘Open: Documentary as a co-creative practice,’ we embark on a journey seeking this very paradise.
Western filmmaking traditions have been characterised by hierarchical structures and a strong individualistic, authoritative voice. Co-creation within the documentary practice, in contrast, allows us to appreciate pluralistic perspectives and, thereby, decolonise the process. The concept of co-creation reframes the ethics of who creates, how, and why… (Cizek et al, 2019).
What is our role as documentary makers? What happens when our ‘subjects’ turn into collaborators? What role can technology play in causing this change? How can we challenge existing hierarchies by brokering power within teams and, with funders and publishers?
We will learn from filmmakers and academics such as Rachel Israel, Katerina Cizek, Sandra Gaudenzi, Maple Rasza, Franziska von Rosen and more.
And ultimately, during the seminar, you will explore a co-creative methodology while making a short documentary project. The seminar will conclude with the screening of all your work and reflections about the process.
