Inhalte | The word “fact,” which derives from the Latin “facere” (to do, make, produce), refers to the manufactured character of the factual. This does not mean that facts are products of fantasy. Discussions about “alternative facts” make it clear, however, that facts must be defended against the suspicion of being mere inventions. But how, exactly, can the factual be separated from the fictional? Or, do we perhaps even need a fiction of facts in order to combat the seemingly incontrovertible factuality of an oppressive world? To counter dominant narratives, eco-feminist, post-colonial and relational thinkers are calling for urgently needed “fictions,” “fabulations” and “speculations.” “Science fact and speculative fabulation need each other,” says Donna Haraway, arguing for “world-changing fictions.” In this sense, fictions do matter and make differences – as the stories, fabulations and constructions that allow us to make sense of the world, in the arts as well as in historiography and science. But, if all facts are fictions, how does that not necessarily lead to anti-scientific relativisms or right-wing post-truths? In this seminar we will delve into diverse conceptions and practices of “fiction,” “fabulation” and “speculation,” asking for differences that matter. In close readings of texts, through films and other works of art, we will explore questions such as these: If Jacques Rancière calls certain documentary films “critical fictions,” how do those aesthetically differ from what he terms naïve “consensual fiction?” If Saidiya Hartman proposes a historiographic method of “critical fabulation,” what is its importance; and how exactly does she practice it in dealing with archival documents? If we consider speculation with Isabelle Stengers as an art of paying attention and safeguarding, how does eco-feminist speculation relate to capitalist financial speculation? |
