“The place where we are is the place where nature is not.” (William Cronon, “The Trouble with Wilderness: or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature,” in Uncommon Ground: Toward Reinventing Nature, ed. William Cronon (New York & London: W.W. Norton & Company, 1995)) Welche Wertesysteme liegen diesem modernen Naturbegriff zugrunde? (E) Extending the seminar series "Decolonizing Futures" and the LAB "Narrative of Nature", a reading-based seminar will undertake a theoretical and critical interrogation of the culture/nature dichotomy as produced in Western thought collectives. Together, we will discuss a heterogeneous conglomerate of texts and positions that address the hegemony of the modern, Western, and colonial visions of nature, in which nature is usually understood as dualistically opposed to culture or human beings. This way of dividing the world positions humans (or some humans) as fundamentally outside of nature. "The place where we are is the place where nature is not." (William Cronon, "The Trouble with Wilderness: or, Getting Back to the Wrong Nature," in Uncommon Ground: Toward Reinventing Nature, ed. William Cronon (New York & London: W.W. Norton & Company, 1995)). What value systems underlie this modern concept of nature? How does the dichotomous worldview express itself today - not least in man-made crises? How is the concept of nature produced in its dichotomous nature and in turn naturalized? And to what extent did it also become a legitimizing tool for colonial and industrial projects of appropriation and exploitation? How can the relationship between humans and their natural environment be thought and lived beyond the binary culture-nature understanding? Starting from a historical localisation and theoretical analysis of the modern concept of nature, in this module we want to dedicate ourselves to post-anthropocentric, posthuman and decolonial positions. Artistic, scientific, philosophical and curatorial models for decolonial narratives of nature will be critically examined for their potential and limitations in a joint discourse. |
