Inhalte | ENG: The tradition of acoustic ecology, which began in the late 1960’s with Murray R. Schafer, proposed a romanticized perception of nature, presenting the soundscape of the environment as idealized in contrast to the urban noise of humans. However, recent inquiries in the field of sonic ecologies and sound art have addressed more complex and ambivalent conceptual relations to human/non-human soundscapes, acknowledging fragile attunements to engage with sonic worlds. For Bruno Latour and Timothy Morton, "nature" is not a useful term, because it is too vague a concept to engage with current ecological disasters. Global capitalism has indeed led to a paradoxical situation, where the human productivism inherently implies the collapse of the biosphere and increased environmental instabilities. The complex entanglements of living worlds, organisms and ecosystems now often occur in the interstices of a planet characterized by anthropo-technological domination. In this context, Anna Tsing raises the question of the possibility of living in the ruins of capitalism, seeking ways to attune sensibly to an uncertain present and (im)possible futures, while Donna J. Haraway invites to stay with the trouble while (re)thinking the relations between companion species. In transdisciplinary artistic practices, the microphone and recording devices offer the possibility to document the soundscapes of disappearing ecosystems and non-human species, but might also invite to listen otherwise by triggering imaginative and collective potentialities in precarious times. The seminar will explore both practical and discursive dimensions at the intersection of critical ecologies, sound studies and sonic arts while investigating what can and cannot be heard raising complex issues and questions on listening, ethics, power, agency, technology, and subjectivity. The aim of the seminar is not only to stay with the trouble but also to attentively listen to it. |
