Lernziele / Kompetenzen
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and global pop cultures, focus on appropriation
InhaltePop culture is a copypaste culture where innovation is not so much about inventing but rather about transforming what has already been transformed. "We are all copies / But the originals are fake" – this is how Belgian indierock band Dead Man Ray boiled down discourses about art & appropriation in their 1998 song "Copy of 78".
The module traces the evolution of appropriation as a cultural technique between entertainment and enlightenment, popular culture and fine arts, cultural criticism and market strategies. We will discuss examples of appropriation art, online meme cultures, and pop music in terms of remixing and sampling. The question whether culture is something one can actually take "possession" of will resurface throughout the module.
