The threshold is a space between two spaces, a time between two times. When we are on the threshold, we are neither in one nor the other, but in the in-between. This is fascinating and threatening at the same time. For the old, which we want to leave, gave us safeness, and the new, which we are looking forward to, we cannot yet assess. Sometimes it is easy for us to make such transitions from old to new, sometimes it is exhausting, energy-sapping and difficult. There are ancient cultural techniques for coping with complex transitional situations: rituals, "rites de passage". Victor Turner, who coined the term "liminality", calls this suspended state of the in-between "betwixt and between", in the old we are no longer, in the new we are not yet.

But rituals are not only relevant in terms of cultural history or cultural anthropology; they also play a role in the arts, whether as self-techniques, as artistic subject, as ritual translation in the arts themselves or as ritualised forms of cultural production, mediation and reception.
Ritual practices in the arts are not new phenomena - think of Joseph Beuys or Maya Derren - and yet they have been popping up everywhere in recent years. Especially in the field of performance, ritual can be observed as a desire for transformative communality in many different forms, but it also shows up in the field of fine arts, for example, when we think of well-known artists such as Kader Attia or Tabita Rezaire. A motivation by a decolonising healing process of a social or ecological trauma underlies both artists. But what does it mean when artists from the global North try to activate the ritual? What does this have to do with cultural appropriation or with one's own religious heritage, be it Christian, Jewish, Muslim or other?

In this seminar we want to examine the ritual in the arts with a critical eye, discuss its potential, make it tangible and let it affect us. For this, we seek out ritual places, invite artistic positions and engage with theoretical perspectives. Based on this, we will place concepts of "rituals" in an expanded cultural anthropological context in order to be able to competently pose the question of how to deal with them today and in the future. In the upcoming course, which will be conceived as a Lab, we will then try to apply the topic on transdisciplinary artistic practices.
