Lernziele / Kompetenzen
  • Introduce the landscape of writing about contemporary art, from the critical review, the catalogue essay, and the exhibition text, also via an exhibition visit and text assessment
  • Introduce what role writing plays in artistic practice today – the artist statement, the commentary
  • Give attendants the opportunity to compose their own writing, and think through the relationship that writing has to their artistic practice
InhalteArt writing seems to be everywhere today, from an Instagram caption to the printout accompanying a project space opening. An artwork seems to need some sort of text. But what do they look like, and what purposes do they fulfil? And how can artists steer the interpretation of their work through writing?
This module gives an introductory insight into the different forms of writing about art and its relationship to artistic practice today. Writing about art takes many forms, from the classic catalogue text to the the critical review, the artist statement, and the essay, but also more everyday formats such as writing for websites and press releases, and social media captions. Working with existing texts and publications, we will investigate these categories and their relationship to art, incorporating examples of how exhibitions and texts relate by visiting a variety of exhibitions, from the museum to the commercial gallery. There will be a practical aspect with participants composing a piece writing about their own work – an important building block for websites and exhibition texts today. The module is intended to be interactive, and discussion based, with an evaluation of writing samples at the end.
