Lernziele / Kompetenzen
  • Engage with the theories and methodologies of performance practitioners, move through some of their methods and gain an understanding of how might apply them to their own art/studio practices
  • Experiment with strategies for how to generate ideas for new (live) art works and set about developing them
  • Explore ways to reflect on the process of making artworks, both collaboratively and independently
InhalteIn this module we will use performance as a tool to think through the action of making and sharing things in public, and explore ways to hold the vulnerability that comes with this publicness. The week will begin with three workshops in which we will read selected essays and texts, move through a number of performance exercises from theatre and dance practitioners and share our reflections with each other. Throughout the week we will attempt to interrogate ‘the cops in our heads’ (Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed, 1974), the critical voices we hear as we practice. We will discuss the repressive social standards that reinforce these voices, and think about how to build practices in spite of, or in light of them. Towards the end of the week we will share short live actions with each other.

Edward Thomasson (*1985) makes videos, plays and drawings about the ways implicit and explicit rules of social interaction shape our behavior. His work explores how performance is used to navigate personal, interpersonal and occupational problems in everyday life. Recent solo exhibitions include Tate Britain, London (2017, with Lucy Beech); David Roberts Art Foundation Studio, London (2016); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2014); Camden Arts Centre, London (2014, with Lucy Beech)
