Inhalte | «Unlike representationalism, which positions us above or outside the world we allegedly merely reflect on, a performative account insists on understanding thinking, observing, and theorizing as practices of engagement with, and as part of, the world in which we have our being.» This claim lies at the core of Meeting the Universe Halfway, Karen Barad’s influential book published in 2007. Opposing the idea that language and knowledge would – more or less accurately – reflect reality – be it facts, objects, ourselves –, Barad focusses on material-discursive practices as they both shape and are shaped by the world. Based on arguments drawn from a specific interpretation of quantum mechanics, her approach further aims at escaping the pitfall of social constructivism, according to which phenomena would be a mere effect of social practices. Furthermore, her claims for a contemporary form of monism at an ontological level have repercussions for the epistemological, ethical and political domains as well. Entanglements are everywhere. In order to grasp and understand in detail the shift of paradigm proponed by Barad in her influential book, as well as its full impact, we will practice close reading of the different chapters, following the threads of thought and identifying what is actually advocated for. We will pay particular attention to her understanding of performativity instead of representationalism with relation to artistic practices, thus attempting at, once again, bridging the arts and sciences. As a material-discursive practice itself, engaging with the book should not leave us untouched: how are we affected by the arguments proposed? Which impact does a performative account have on our reading, on our discursive practices, and on how we engage with other material bodies in various practices of intra-action? In other words: the seminar shall not only scrutinize matters of understanding but also critically address the extent in which understanding matters. |
