Inhalte | Travel is a powerful social and cultural practice by means of which humans form ideas about the self and others, society and the nation, and about the past and present. Historical travellers sought to educate themselves in cultures that were not their own, while contemporary mass tourism and its environmental impact trespass ethical limits. But travel is not only about physical movement between geographical locations. Rather, it is an event in which we project our desires considering the aims, ways and forms of departing, moving forward and arriving. While travelling as the way of life of nomadic communities may be seen an end in itself, travelling through the physical landscapes and darkest spots of our souls may revoke bodily movements and endow us with profound self-awareness. What shapes can travel take? What are the aesthetic dimensions of travelling? What does it mean to arrive somewhere? Where ought we to start? As the notion of travel will dictate our practical and theoretical as well as our mental and corporeal voyages during this week, we will explore these and related questions in order to gain a better understanding of the experience of travelling, the diversity of its modalities, motives, models and means. A tour de force through a range of subjects, this course will involve the exploration of artistic travel (including the Grand Tour in its historical and present incarnations) and travelling art projects, mountaineering in the Alps and the Himalayas, road movies, space travel and science fiction. In lectures, seminars and thought experiments, we will investigate the cultural history of travel through readings, reflections and discussions. A major part of the week will be devoted to artistic practice and research. The students will develop their own projects, individually or in groups; this can take the form of a visual piece, a research project, a performance or a textual intervention. Throughout the week, we will maintain a travel log to record our experiences. Mentoring on artistic practice (Hedinger) and theory (Hölling) will also be offered. On the final day, all projects will be presented, followed by peer feedback. This seminar is open to students from the visual arts, music, theatre, performance and literature. |
