Lernziele / Kompetenzen• Overview of the use of spatial models in Art and Architecture
• How to read and model space from architectural drawings
• Budget methods for mocking up spatial environments for testing artistic works
• Methods of communicating artistic works in architectural space through images
InhalteThis course will introduce the principles of modelling architectural space with the intention of testing how artistic works will perform in spatial environments. In addition, the course will also discuss how these tests can operate as artistic works in their own right as well as being used to supplement competition entries, public tenders or calls for interest in exhibitions.

As an introduction to Modelling Space this course will focus on low-budget methods for testing artistic works and interventions in architectural space. The primary mode of production will be in physical model format at a scale of 1:20. These models will be produced from a reading of construction drawings of celebrated international galleries and landscapes. In this context applicants will work directly with the fundamental elements of architectural space, floors, walls, ceiling, doors, windows, rooflights and staircases in order to construct sets for the staging and testing of artistic works.

The spatial models will then be tested with different lighting conditions and curatorial positioning of artistic works in space before being photographed. Photographs will then be edited and processed in preparation for publication.

Applicants will work through analogue models, photography, digital images, drawings and text. Work will be carried out in groups (production of models) and as individuals (curating/processing of images). There will be an opportunity to test group showings of the applicants chosen artistic works as well as the ability to test several individual artistic works set as part of a spatial sequence. The course will include lectures, readings, group discussions and practical instruction for material production.

Pre course requirements – Applicants are asked to select and submit either a photograph of an artistic work which they have authored or a work or works by another artist which they would like to test in an architectural space or landscape. Based on the submissions of the applicants three to four types of architectural space (galleries or landscapes) will be selected for modelling and testing purposes.
