Lernziele / Kompetenzen | • To explore critical ideas around radical love and emotion • To explore feminist and queer discourse in relation to experimental film making practice. |
Inhalte | Drawing on feminist and queer discourse this course will look at concepts and ideas key to my own practice. We will explore critical ideas around the emotional, the auto fictional and the idea of self as material, as well as subject positions like motherhood and thematics such as love and care. We will examine these ideas at the level of subject, through the collective analysis of relevant texts and films, but also, crucially at a formal level, in relation to our own productions and our own lives! We will we look at how a feminist and queer experimental film making practice could manifest, exploring community, collectivity, slowness and inclusivity as critical methodologies in the making and producing of films. About the lecturer: Beatrice Gibson (b.1978) is a French British filmmaker currently based in Palermo, Sicily. Her films are improvised and experimental in nature. Drawing on cult figures from experimental music, literature and poetry - from Cornelius Cardew and Robert Ashley to Kathy Acker and Gertrude Stein - Gibson’s films are citational and participatory. Populated by friends and influences from within her immediate community, they often cite and incorporate co-creative and collaborative processes and ideas. Gibson is twice winner of The Tiger Award for best short film, Rotterdam International Film Festival, winner of the 2015 Baloise Art Prize, Art Basel and the Marian McMahon Akimbo Award for Autobiography, 2019. In 2013 she was nominated for the Max Mara Prize for Women artists. She has recently had recent solo exhibitions at KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, (2018 ) Camden Arts Centre, London, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen and Mercer Union, Toronto (2019). Her films have shown at film festivals around the word, including at New York film festival, Toronto International film festival, London film festival, Oberhausen Film Festival, Courtisane Film Festival, Punto De Vista International Documentary Film Festival and many more. Her latest film premiered at Directors Fortnight, Cannes film festival 2019. She is currently working on a feature film inspired by the heroine of Kathy Acker’s Don Quixote. www.beatricegibson.com |
