  • Reflecting on the relationship between performance and the moving image
  • Practically exploring their relation in exercises
InhaltePerformance and the moving image have an enduring relationship, which is often full of tension. How are these two mediums interdependent, and how are they inherently different? On the one hand, performance only exists beyond the ephemeral moment if it is captured by a camera. On the other hand, the camera inevitably re-frames the live event into an infinitely repeatable medium. What are the implications of this relationship – representationally, formally, politically? The aim of this workshop is to engage an expanding field of performance art that is increasingly relevant to contemporary visual art. We will explore these questions through study, with an emphasis on practice. This workshop will be a series of group activities, discussions, and individual assignments. Students will produce a short performance in response to an assigned prompt to be presented in class and then reproduced in a collaborative film format. Basic camera and editing skills are helpful, and an openness to participate and collaborate are essential.

Students who took the module in the Spring 2020 semester are asked not to re-enroll.
