  • This seminar focuses on film practice but wants to open up on different expanded forms of narratives, including performance
  • Explore a new medium, a new technology, and to go beyond their practice
  • Critical reflection about the discussed materials and their own practice.
InhalteThrough film, performance art, gender studies and anthropology, this seminar explores the concepts of performativity and the carnivalesque. By mobilizing satire and all forms of grotesquery, a carnival subverts the veneer of hierarchy and order. But transgression also exists in religious rites that seem more orderly and repressive. The studied materials will point us to riddles like these: Why all this blood around Jesus, why all this nudity, and why those skeletons? In what kinds of performances do communities engage when they let substances alter their minds and bodies? If rituals aimed at conjuring death are forbidden because of the fear of death, what happens?

Pauline Curnier Jardin (*1980) is an artist, filmmaker and performer. Her colourful, dark film installations draw from popular culture and autobiography. In 2019 she was awarded the Preis der Nationalgalerie. Solo/group exhibitions include: HKW Berlin, Venice Biennale, Tate Modern, Feature Art Basel.
