Lernziele / Kompetenzen | Strategies to relate words and images in artistic production and their presentation. This includes reflection and awareness of relevant contemporary practices in art and poetry. |
Inhalte | How far the tiger walked and how little he made himself to sit by this fire and drink Milk This poem by Pati Hill is placed opposite to a xerox of an image. Strategies of relating text and image are in the focus of this course. Pati Hills work is currently presented at the Kunsthalle Zürich. Next to her work we will discuss positions of Lorenza Longhi, Dieter Roth, Adrian Piper, Paul Klee, Gili Tal, Charles Olson, Anne Carson, Johanna Drucker, Klara Liden, Ghislaine Leung, Precious Okoyomon, We Are Publication, Bhanu Kapil. By putting together all these different kinds of otherness we will explore how to approach and how to involve poetries and words into artistic production. Perhaps through camouflaging techniques and strategies. Moreover, why do words become strong and how? To approach language - and the source materials - in a different way each time, we start from the point, that the reflection of language is at the service of specific values (related to advertisment, fictional characters from movies and literature). We will consider ways to turn the theoretical discourses into action, testing self-publishing and visual experiments. We will read and approach together different examples every day and do presentations/practical mimicking experiments based on the subjects we will read about "make do". About the lecturers: Dr. Nils Röller is Professor for Media and Cultural Theory. In his practice he explores contemporary poetic strategies (romanform.ch). Currently he prepares a Research Project on Visual Philosophy (www.iconographyofphilosophy). 2019 NR curated the exhibition "Zellenleben" and the symposion "Abständiges" at the Kunstraum Kreuzlingen as part of this Research. Lorenza Longhi is an artist her works address and contest the everyday as a set of standard functional codes. Her works have been shown in various European exhibition spaces and institutions including Fanta-MLN, Milan; Bungalow, Berlin; LA Quadriennale di Roma, Rome; Plymouth Rock Zurich; Kunsthalle Zürich, Villa Vassilieff, Paris Milieu, Bern, Museum Im Bellpark, Kriens Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin. In 2020, Lorenza Longhi received the Shizuko Yoshikawa Award. www.lorenzalonghi.biz Nina Kerschbaumer is a filmmaker, researcher and an assisting teacher at DFA. She is interested in fact and fiction narratives and the deconstruction of common storytelling methods. In her artistic work, she explores how the supposed distinction of private and public space and its visual representation affect concrete social and political decisions. Her research is directly linked to her practice as a Visual Artist, centered around mobile phone photography in social media, its production methods and implications. |
