Inhalte | This seminar explores queer art history from its still veiled and coded beginnings - as a culture of the innuendo - at the turn of the 20th century, though its first openly celebrated pioneering expressions and life styles in the 1920s to the 1960s beatnik culture and 1970s new collectivity, and from the 1980s AIDS-crisis related activism to contemporary practices of queer performativity in a time of renewed political repression. The seminar will include live conversations with queer artists about their practice. This seminar is offered twice in the autumn semester. Please enroll only once. Anke Kempkes (*1968) is an international curator, scholar and art critic currently based in Warsaw. Since her studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 1991/2 she has contributed to international art publications, magazines and conferences. In 2004 she held the position of Chief Curator at Kunsthalle Basel. From 2005-17 she ran an independent curatorial space, research centre and gallery in New York. The program focused on the reintroduction of female avant-garde artists and on New York’s experimental music and performance art of the 1960s and 70s. |
