Inhalte | The seminar focuses on the manifold interactions between dance and the visual arts. The starting point is the ballet "Le sacre du printemps", which was first performed in 1913 in Paris in the choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky. With its revolutionary music by Igor Stravinsky, it is considered one of the great moments of the departure into modernity. The seminar uses examples to highlight the most important movements of the 20th/21st century. A focus will also be placed on postmodern dance with its claim that "every movement is part of a dance and every person is a dancer". Further central issues are the re-presentation of the performative and the notation of movement and dance action processes by means of various media - from the classical photographic and cinematic to the sculptural and installative way. In the seminar we will also interpret simple scores and will do a short excursion. Dr. Raphael Gygax (*1980) is an art historian, curator and writer. He studied Art History, Film and Drama Studies at the Universities of Berne and Zurich. The topic of his PhD was on the use of instrumentalized bodies in contemporary art. From 2003–2019 he was Curator at the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich where he curated numerous exhibitions and was Head of Publications. In Spring 2019 he was appointed Head of the Bachelor Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Zurich. Edward Thomasson (*1985) makes videos, plays and drawings about the ways implicit and explicit rules of social interaction shape our behavior. His work explores how performance is used to navigate personal, interpersonal and occupational problems in everyday life. Recent solo exhibitions include Tate Britain, London (2017, with Lucy Beech); David Roberts Art Foundation Studio, London (2016); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2014); Camden Arts Centre, London (2014, with Lucy Beech). |
