InhalteWhen the sun is below the horizon, there emerges a space in which different phenomena occur. In complete darkness, we might be lured by this strange realm enforced by associations of magic, legend and folklore. We may also want to sleep or hunt, have nightmares or experience anxieties. Fixing the temporal register on the interval between sunset and sunrise, this module proposes to examine the night’s propensity for creativity manifest itself in a diversity of artistic and cultural expressions: from film, music, through the visual arts and performance to dance. Focusing on the night as both a physical-meteorological phenomenon and a cultural image, we will scrutinise what the night makes possible and how it is constrained by transdisciplinary artistic practice and critical discourse. By means of lectures, instruction and seminars scheduled throughout this module, we will investigate the cultural history of darkness through readings, reflections and discussions. A significant part of the week will be devoted to artistic practice and research. Individually or in collaboration, each student will develop his/her own project: a visual work, research project, performance or textual intervention. Mentoring will be offered in terms of artistic practice (Hedinger) and theory (Hölling). The final day will see the presentation of all projects, followed by peer feedback. This seminar is open to students from the visual arts, music, theatre, performance and literature.
