Inhalte	The persistent discourse of catastrophe and crisis modes has prompted the ever-more frequent emergence of new (ethno-)futurisms, which confront the impasse of our time with radical technological and political scenarios of the future. The Master’s symposium, “Speculative Futures: Are We Burning Our Past?” asks whether there has been an overall rethinking of “time” or “the future” and a departure from the conventional linear chronology of past, present, and future. “Speculative Futures” focuses on a concept beginning with the future for the sake of a “better present”, in contrast to scenarios that seek a “better future” from the perspective of the present. This goes hand-in-hand with the question of how artists reflect on, prefigure, and/or invoke sociocultural implications and transformations. However, this future-centrism does not mean losing sight of important political and cultural questions relating to the past, as seen in postcolonial discourse. In fact, these questions attain new relevance under the auspices of current debates. Climate change, for example, poses a threat not only to future generations: we are burning our past while we destroy our future. Who pays the toll for climate change? To what extent does it affect different people differently, based on their national and cultural contexts? What natural heritage are we obliterating? Over the course of the Masters symposium, lectures and workshops with and by artists, curators and theorists will discuss these questions. In three sections, the symposium will interrogate “counter-futures” and “present futures”. What artistic and technological possibilities can be harnessed to that end? Who sets the narrative? How can future scenarios be imagined away from hegemonic subjectivities? What is the relationship between democracy and time? *** Auf den permanenten Krisendiskurs und Krisenmodus reagieren immer öfter neue (Ethno-)Futurismen, die dem gegenwärtigen Stillstand mit radikalen technologischen und politischen Zukunftsszenarien begegnen. Das Master-Symposium «Speculative Futures – Are we burning our past?» stellt die Frage, ob damit auch ein generelles Umdenken über «Zeit» bzw. «Zukunft» stattgefunden hat, nachdem die altbekannte lineare Chronologie von Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft verabschiedet wurde. Speculative Futures fokussiert auf ein Denken aus der Zukunft für eine «bessere Gegenwart», im Unterschied zu Zukunftsszenarien für eine «bessere Zukunft». Dies geht mit der Frage einher, wie KünstlerInnen soziokulturelle Implikationen und Transformationen reflektieren und (vor-)evozieren. Dieser Fokus auf die Zukunft bedeutet aber keinesfalls, das wichtige politische und kulturelle Fragen die Vergangenheit betreffend – wie sie im postkolonialen Diskurs geführt wurden – aus dem Blick geraten. Vielmehr bekommen sie unter den Auspizien aktueller Diskussionen neue Relevanz. So stellt zum Beispiel der Klimawandel nicht nur eine Bedrohung für die Zukunftsgenerationen dar, sondern wir verbrennen unsere Vergangenheit und zerstören unsere Zukunft. Wer ist vom Klimawandel betroffen und im welchem Ausmaß trifft es die unterschiedlichen Personen abhängig von ihrem nationalen und kulturellen Kontext? Und welches Naturerbe zerstören wir? Diese Fragen werden im Rahmen des Master-Symposiums in Vorträgen und Workshops mit KünstlerInnen, KuratorInnen und TheoretikerInnen diskutiert. In drei Sektionen soll die Frage nach «Gegen(warts)zukünften» gestellt werden. Welche künstlerischen und technologischen Potentiale können hierfür ausgeschöpft werden? Wer erzählt bzw. wie lassen sich Zukunftsszenarien fernab von hegemonialen Subjektvorstellungen denken? Was ist die Beziehung von Demokratie und Zeit? Informationen zu den Lehrpersonen \| About the teachers: Marie-France Rafael, born in Munich in 1984, holds a Ph.D. in Art History. She studied Art History and Film Studies in Berlin and Paris. From 2011 to 2015 she was a research associate at the Free University of Berlin and until 2019 at the Muthesius University Kiel, Department of Spatial Strategies/Curatorial Spaces. Her monograph, Reisen ins Imaginativ. Künstlerische Displays und Situationen (Cologne: Walther König, 2017), was recently published. Other publications include Ari Benjamin Meyers. Music on Display (Cologne: Walther König, 2016), and Pierre Huyghe. On Site (Cologne: Walther König, 2013).
