Inhalte | Law is one of the most important domains of power, protection and individual agency in society, and is a subject taken up by a growing number of noted contemporary artists. This workshop will examine, encourage and hopefully inspire artistic approaches to law. How does law make us feel? Can culture create justice? What is law as an artistic medium? Along the way we may consider related topics such as the performativity and aesthetics of law, the intersection of the psychological and the judicial, legal architectures, law’s biases and blindnesses, relations between law and social justice, photography and law, or the materiality and sculptural potential of legal objects. Supplemented by screenings and artist talks with Susan Schuppli (artist, writer and director of Forensic Architecture programme) and Jill Magid (artist), and possibly with a site visit (to be confirmed), we will consider a number of artistic approaches in relation to addressing, articulating and critiquing law, consider how to find materials to work with, and support your own engagement with the subject. An indicative list of artists whose work we may consider includes: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Rosella Biscotti, Forensic Architecture, Shilpa Gupta, Rana Hamadeh, Jenny Holzer, Kapwani Kapanga, Mary Kelly, Adam Linder, Jill Magid, Uriel Orlow, Cameron Rowland, Susan Schuppli, Sable Elyse Smith, Jonas Staal, Superflex. The workshop will be suitable for those working in any artistic media or approach. About the teacher: Carey Young (lives and works in London) has developed her artistic practice from a cross-fertilization of disciplines including law, politics and business, and since 2002 has developed a body of artistic work across performance, photography, installation and text that explores law as an artistic medium. Her recent lens-based works consider the complex relations between gender, law and the cinematic. Young’s work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at Dallas Museum of Art, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Zurich) & The Power Plant (Toronto). She is represented by Paula Cooper, NYC. |
