A New World of Interactions under Our Feet?” – Lately, an article in a high ranked scientific journal has been published, titled “Sounds of Soil: A New World of Interactions under Our Feet?” The unique aspect about this article is that it has been co-authored by a scientist and an artist, a constellation of authorship you until recently did not find in journals of natural sciences. The paper is the result of a question the artist posed to the scientist in an artistic residency in a research lab: “What sounds do fungi make as they grow through soil?” A question that to artists does not seem too surprising but a scientist may not come across easily. In this case, this question was a revelation for the scientific research, resulting in a new way and new tools of looking at and studying nature. In the seminar, we focus on practices where forms of knowledge from the arts and the sciences are entangled in each other, be it through mutual collaboration of artists and scientists, or be it through reciprocal responses to their respective practices and fields of interest. At the same time, the seminar is based on the conviction that neither “the arts” nor “the sciences” are clear-cut or homogeneous fields, but that practices, methodologies or results fundamentally differ when it comes to a cooperation between for example, sound arts and biology, or visual arts and the humanities. Their reciprocal attraction is often very individual. However, it makes it all the more possible to inquire into the underlying motives of such projects and to observe the configuration of their approaches and procedures. Asking unorthodox questions, like in the above example, putting focus on the seemingly unimportant or taking in a different perspective, is one strength of artists that scientists start to appreciate more and more. However, there are also other ways in which art and science come together, for example in the context of artistic research, where aesthetic practices are employed as a means for insight, or sometimes this can also be turned around and aesthetic aspects in the sciences become the object of artistic interest. The motivation and the reasons for an approach between art and science are manifold. What becomes clear though, is that an approach between the two fields can be productive for both. In some cases, it can even go beyond the disciplinary boundaries and result in something entirely new. Together with guests that move on those boundaries, in the seminar we want to follow this path and question what this new could be, what we, as artists, find intriguing about the sciences, what expectations we have to these collaborations, and where our fascination for, what long was considered “the opposite” field, comes from. We will work with texts that allow us to reflect this topic and draw on artistic examples. |
