— Methods of walking and strolling, of aimlessly roaming or getting lost have a long history in the artistic examination of – in particular – urban space, which is continued in formats such as "Walking Pieces", "Audio Walks" or "Walkshops". Despite all the differences between the respective approaches, what such formats have in common is that "space" is not understood as a neutral container, but is first constituted through movement and actions. Changes and interruptions of everyday movements draw attention to what is usually overlooked, but also literally turn one place into another. "All in all," writes the cultural scientist Michel de Certeau, "space is a place with which one does something." In urban space different materials, infrastructures, time regimes, functions and meanings overlap – it is, according to De Certeau, "an ambiguous unity of conflict programs and contractual agreements". The biennial international conference of ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts) will be hosted by the ZHdK in November this year. In workshops, lectures and presentations, numerous representatives of European art schools deal with transdisciplinary formats of teaching and learning under the title "Expanding the Arts". Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference will take place online. Together with students and lecturers from London, we are working on "walkshops" in this lab, to which we will invite participants of the conference. We are pursuing two goals: On the one hand, the conference participants should be made more familiar with the local conditions of the host institution, on the other hand, the walkshops should bring together representatives of different disciplines and initiate discussions in which proximity and distance, similarities and differences, but also quarrels, perplexity and misunderstandings are experienced, thus challenging conventional notions of transdisciplinarity and creating new "transdisciplinary stories". In preparation for the ELIA conference, we will use instruments of "promenadology", dérive and psychogeography, or De Certeau's "Walking in the City" to explore different practices of walking. Along the way we collect information and materials (photographs, films, sound recordings), which we share with students from London on a digital platform. These materials form the starting point for the conception of the Walkshops, to which we take participants of the conference in online formats. After the conference, the walkshops will be evaluated and possible further developments will be outlined together with the partners from London. |
