Inhalte | The course concretizes the continuation of the exploration of sound studies from the manifold perspectives of transdisciplinarity as initiated during the past semesters. By acknowledging the fact that listening is neither neutral, nor purely physiological but mostly oriented, situated and constructed, the course explores sonic materialism from specific historical, technological, cultural, social and ecological perspectives while addressing issues around these fields of research. Departing from a position reducing sound as an immaterial outside, sonic materialism aims to consider sound as a producer of intensities and becoming, thus attempting to escape solely dualist perceptions like representation/signification, nature/culture or human/non-human. The course aims to implement a critical approach to sound and listening helping the reflection of non-linear sonic histories that are saturated with frictions. Presented as a complementary alternative to visual studies of media and society, the goal of the course is to help implement the subjective ear as a major instrument for the production of artistic and scientific knowledges. Moreover, the course aims to imagine and experiment different languages to address sound and listening while thinking sonic worlds transversally in the present time outside of a specialized musical grammar. By engaging with current literature within sound studies, the seminar will permit to reflect varied sensible ways to listen to sonic worlds nowadays and will try to approach sound and listening as a multiple (inter)relational practice. Furthermore, by investigating actual discourses and positions to be found within adventurous sonic practices like sound art, field recordings, acoustic ecology, speculative sonic fiction, soundscapes and noise, the students will benefit from an insight into current sonic arts. The course is opened to non-musicians and to anyone interested to reflect sound and listening from a transversal perspective. |
