Inhalte | What does the word “collective” promise in respect to work inside and outside the art world? And which effects do these promises have on reality when people who are working together try to make them come true, let themselves be inspired or irritated by them, experience them as empowering or as frustrating, insurmountable obstacles? Departing from these questions, the 4-days seminar will combine theoretical explorations, discussions and practical experiments in order to investigate possibilities and problems of democratic, or even anarchic, producing. We will familiarise ourselves with different concepts of collectivity – from strong-bonded group work based on friendship, love or shared existential conditions, through various forms of dividing-up and reassembling labour, to loose, swarm-like collective dynamics that operate without an image of the collective as a whole and do not attempt to integrate all parts. We will analyse examples of collective projects and also draw on our own experience to determine appropriate criteria for evaluating, critiquing, and managing collective work: How do ethical-political values and aesthetic values relate to each other? Does collectively produced art require another concept of aesthetics – a concept that stimulates visitors to approach art with different expectations, different habits of perceiving and judging work? Will collective production work at all with formats such as exhibitions and performances, which notoriously address people as ‘the audience,’ or would a co-productive format like the workshop not be more congenial to its means and ends? And, last but not least – how to reconcile one’s own expectations of collectivity with the demands from art institutions and funding programmes? |

Bemerkung | Kai van Eikels combines philosophy, cultural studies, art theory, theatre and performance studies in his work. Some of his research topics are: collectivity and politics of participation; time and matter in performance; art and labour; series and seriality in different artistic disciplines; the workshop as an artistic-political format; aesthetics and politics of cuteness. He is currently teaching at Ruhr Universität Bochum. His publications include: Die Kunst des Kollektiven. Performance zwischen Theater, Politik und Sozio-Ökonomie (2013); Art works.
