Inhalte | We are witnessing a hyper-abundance in discourses around identity: Contemporary politics across the world focus on narratives of belonging, nationality, and culture in order to define borders and shape commonalities. At the same time, transcultural communities emerge around globally shared personal interests, and forge new kinds of identities, often embodied in non-physical spaces like the internet. Identities are transient and shaped around a large variety of variables, like gender, class, race. More than just theoretical constructs, each of these notions has its physicalities. In this seminar, we will approach different concepts of spatial identity in order to explore how their realities sonically manifest in Kazakhstan and Switzerland. What narratives emerge around topics of (non-)belonging, and how do these sound? Who gets to tell what stories, and under what circumstances? Participants will collaborate with young artists from Kazakhstan (more information on the partner organisation below) and create a short audio-narrative episode (podcast, music, soundscape, field recording, sonic mapping etc.). This should reflect their experiences and ideas around the topics of identity and belonging in a globalized world. The final result will be presented as a mix-tape; performative formats can accompany it. The seminar begins with a short introduction to audio-recording and editing tools as well as narrative practices that explore and embody identities. It will also provide a theoretical framework, which gives further points of departure for the exploration of the main topics. Kazakhstan, a country often omitted from international art discourses, is undergoing an interesting shift in its history: a former Soviet Republic, its contemporary politics focus on independence and the quest for a particular national identity. The emerging contemporary art scene is currently forging its specific position in this context, and often commenting on identity impacts of hot societal topics ranging from gender and equality debates, to language reforms, ecological threats, repercussions of globalized trade, to the recent presidential election (which was accompanied by many protests across the country). Our partner organisation in Almaty, Kazakhstan is the “School of Artistic Gesture”, a non-governmental initiative for contemporary art education, founded by the Eurasian Cultural Alliance (ECA). The project “QWAS: Migrating Dialogue” has been collaborating with the School of Artistic Gesture since 2017. |
