LehrformThis workshop is about experiencing different ways of travelling and trying to encapsulate the intangible input into a tangible output. We will experiment with different media we are familiar with or not at all in order to observe and create moments of shift, traverse, trespass, change.

Inhalte“Metaphor, in fact, means ‘transport’. That’s Hermes’s very method: he exports and imports; thus, he traverses. He invents and can be mistaken-because of analogies, which are dangerous and even forbidden-but we know no other route to invention. The messenger’s impression of foreignness comes from this contradiction: that transport is the best and the worst thing, the clearest and the most obscure, the craziest and the most certain.” (Michel Serres, 1990)

The greek word for Transport is μεταφορά and it means also Metaphor. As Wolfram Groddeck notices (“Reden über Rhetorik”, 1995), it is a word that in its plural, Μεταφοραί, can be encountered extremely often in Greece – it is a travelling concept; it is written on moving trucks that transport commodities around the country. Through a metaphor, the meaning of a word is proportionally transferred to another context that does not or cannot literally exist. Metaphor in that sense can be a vehicle; a device that transports what it carries.

We will refer to episodes of “Star Trek: The original series” and literary texts by Lewis Carroll and Jorge Luis Borges, to Eisenstein’s montage theory in combination to contemporary understandings on metaphor and other figures of speech as paradox and adynaton (in greek: impossible), analogy and allegory examples.

We will travel by public transport and we will try out meditation and hypnosis techniques, while experimenting with forms of analog and digital documentation of our experience: journals, logs, pictures, video and sound recordings, sensors, apps and any other medium that could serve our purpose.
