__________________________________________________________________________________________________ In this integrative course, students of ETH and ZHdK will investigate the sound characteristics of a landscape (a so-called soundscape) with practical exercises in the field and artistic experiments in a collaborative project. After an introduction to Acoustic Ecology and the recording technologies used in this research discipline as well as their artistic and scientific applications, we will concentrate on a landscape section, a local ecosystem in the agglomeration of Zurich. Our acoustic, scientific and artistic investigations focus on ecological relationships and problems in the urban agglomeration. We investigate these using audio recordings, which we interpret acoustically, ecologically and artistically. The recordings are made with microphones, but also with special audio sensors with which acoustic signals can be detected in plants, in soil or underwater. The recorded audio material is analysed in relation to the following possible questions: What about biodiversity in industrial fallow land or forests close to cities, how does climate change affect urban areas - for example, do trees in urban areas have greater drought stress than in forests? How healthy are permaculture or urban gardening soils and how (acoustically) active are soil animals compared to allotments? How does traffic affect the fauna, can this be measured acoustically and represented artistically? How can scientific and artistic research methods be brought together in questions of landscape and urban ecology? These questions will be investigated in working groups and the results will flow into a jointly developed soundmap. This is a map that can be called up online, in which audio recordings or other media and artistically designed content may be embedded. The content developed in the working groups will be presented and discussed on the last day of the lecture; the soundmap will be publicly available. Public transport costs must be paid by the students |
