Pool 3: Artistic Research – In Practice and in Theory 

The two-part seminar and workshop creates a dynamic platform for an insight and exchange of research related knowledge. PhD group members will share experiences of their own research projects and will give an introduction to different methodologies of contemporary artistic research.

Das zweiteilige Seminar und Workshop schafft eine dynamische Plattform für einen Einblick und Austausch von forschungsbezogenen Erfahrungen. Mitglieder der ZHdK PhD-Forschungsgruppe geben Einblicke in ihre Forschungsprojekte und informieren über verschiedene Ansätze und Methoden zeitgenössischer künstlerischer Forschung.

Lernziele / KompetenzenThe objective is to introduce participants to:
  • issues, potentials and perspectives of artistic research
  • various concepts of artistic research based on insights into research projects presented by the PhD candidates
  • to question what an art-based research PhD can potentially be
  • methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches and what it really means to undertake a research project, how to write a research proposal and how to apply for funding

Ziel der beiden Lehrveranstaltungen ist es, dass die Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen
  • einen vertieften Einblick in die Problematiken, Potentiale und Perspektiven der künstlerischen Forschung erhalten und den internationalen State-of-the-Art kennenlernen können
  • anhand konkreter PhD-Projekte und künstlerischer Forschungsarbeiten zu verstehen, was kunstbasierter Forschung leistet und sein kann
- wissen, wie ein künstlerischer PhD strukturiert ist und wie das Forschungs- und Promotionsvorhaben abläuft
  • konkret erfahren, was es heisst, ein Exposé für eine künstlerische Forschungsarbeit zu verfassen, welche Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten bestehen und wie man sich darum bewerben kann
Inhalte1st part: short introduction to the history of artistic research and to selected international good practice examples, how to write a PhD research proposal and how to apply for research funding (e.g. SNF)

2nd part: practice based workshop aiming to discuss and test different artistic research methodologies.

The discussion will focus on the difference between art and artistic research by asking the possible societal need for artistic research. Further we will discuss the interdisciplinary aspect, looking at concrete artistic research processes and try to grasp the concept of the artefact as the outcome of artistic research.

Three PhD-projects will be presented and discussed more in detail:

  • (T)RACE-ING LOUIS AGASSIZ. Artistic Renegotiations of Archive, Memory and Place by Sasha Huber
  • (M)eine Geschichte der Gewalt. Ein biographisches Experiment by Kai Ziegner

1. Teil: Einführung in die Geschichte der künstlerischen Forschung, Vorstellung hervorragender aktueller Forschungsprojekte, Einblick in das Entwickeln und Schreiben eines Exposés für ein künstlerisches Forschungsprojekt, Informationen zu Fördermöglichkeiten (z.B. SNF) und der Anlage entsprechender Bewerbungsunterlagen.

2. Teil: Praxisworkshop und Diskussion zu verschiedenen Verfahrensweisen der künstlerischen Forschung.

Die Diskussion wird sich mit dem Unterschied von Kunst und künstlerischer Forschung beschäftigen und der Frage, welche gesellschaftliche Rolle und mögliche gesellschaftliche Dringlichkeit künstlerische Forschung einnehmen kann. Weiter werden wir uns mit dem interdisziplinären Aspekt auseinandersetzen, indem wir konkrete Forschungsprozesse anschauen und versuchen, den Begriff des Artefakts als ein Ergebnis von künstlersicher Forschung zu verstehen.
