InhalteA module on Artists’ books, with a particular emphasis on artists working with language through a hands-on theoretical focus! Through an historical analysis and definition, and a study of practical example of artists’ books – from Ed Ruscha Herman de Vries, and Peter Downsbrough through to Dan Walsh, Yoko Ono and contemporary positions –, this study into books is aimed for each and all to ultimately make a book.

A major emphasis will be drawn in readdressing what can a catalogue be, both in regard to an exhibition, and as an autonomous entity: in realising an exhibition solely as a book ; to render the catalogue entirely autonomous ; for the catalogue to be both a manifest and an anthology. But also in terms of catalogues as historical materials, in considering an existing exhibition catalogue as a score to be (re)enacted ; and to offer a history that was never written.

Mathieu Copeland is a curator who has been developing a practice seeking to subvert the traditional role of exhibitions and to renew our perceptions of these.

He co-curated the exhibition “VOIDS, A Retrospective” at the Centre Pompidou—Paris and the Kunsthalle—Bern, and edited the celebrated anthology VOIDS. Among many others, he curated “A Choreographed Exhibition” at the Kunsthalle St Gallen & La Ferme du Buisson (2007), “Soundtrack for an Exhibition” (2006), “Alan Vega” (2009) and “Gustav Metzger” (2013) at the Musee d’Art Contemporain—Lyon or again “A Mental Mandala” at MUAC—Mexico City (2013). He initiated and curated the series “EAC – Expat Art Centre” (2004—2006), “A Spoken Word Exhibitions” (2007—ongoing), “Reprise” (2011—ongoing) and the “Exhibitions to Hear Read” (2010—on going, presented in 2013 at MoMA—New York.)

His recent exhibitions include “A Retrospective of Closed Exhibitions” at the Kunsthalle Fribourg (2016) and “The Exhibition of a Dream” at the Gulbenkian Foundation (2017). He realized in 2014 “The exhibition of a film” – an exhibition as a feature film for cinemas. Copeland edited the critically acclaimed anthology and manifest publication “Choreographing Exhibitions.” In 2017, he co-edited the radical anthology “The Anti-Museum”. Forthcoming books include the anthology of Gustav Metzger’s writings (March 2019 by JRP-Ringier, with the support of the ZHDK).
