Kontext: contact zone – a project on international artistic cooperation
The project aims to enable the participants to experience foreign realities. In addition, it strives for a critical examination of social media and digital means of communication, which are ever-present in our daily lives and shape our ways of thinking and acting. It attempts to turn this issue into an encounter and a reflection space through artistic exploration. The participants will deal theoretically and practically with post_colonialism and "globalization", as well as artistic work in a social context and participation in contemporary art.
The title refers to the concept of Mary Louise Pratt's "The Contact Zone" (1991), originally developed for the linguistics, now also discussed in the human sciences, in the context of feminist theory, critical race theory, post-colonial theory and critical pedagogy, which provides a social space for linguistic and cultural encounters in which power is negotiated. Pratt's "Contact Zone" is a place of transculturality, critical engagement with the community, critical pedagogy, authethnography, criticism, discussion and resistance to hegemony.

Inhalte | Starting point of this project is a digital exchange where we get to know each other, the approaches in our respective art practices, the specific environments, our daily lives, as well as the different political situations. We will work in small, mixed groups of 2-4 people, communicate via social media and digital means and develop small artistic projects together: trying to find individual ways to work on collective art projects, using different media. An experimental and process-based approach has priority over end results. The emphasis here is on the interaction, on communication (the choice of its medium), the confrontation with the respective counterpart, the common process. The interactions become, so to speak, part of the "material" of the artistic cooperations. Even though the starting point for this project will be the (Blockwoche) block week, the project / the artistic exchanges / communication with the art students from abroad will continue for aprox. the rest of the year and will conclude, if the participants agree on it, in joint, digital happenings in the various cities. Olivia Jaques is an artist / cultural worker with a focus on space, perception and in situ artistic working processes. In her work, this field of interest of >>relating<< is extended via discursive, collective, process based and experimental formats, theoretical and curatorial questions. |
