Inhalte | Manifestos, essays, and other artists' statements have always constituted an important aspect of artistic production. As it has been extensively documented, texts of this kind notably played an essential role for conceptual art. More recently however, we are facing a growing interest for artist's writings of a new kind: reintroducing narrative in the visual arts, the increasing number of novels and short stories written and published by artists points to the emergence of a new phenomenon, the scope and significance of which we would like to examine in more detail in this seminar. As a first approximation, artists’ novels can be characterized by two main traits. First, starting from Roland Barthes' diagnosis of the death of the author, they open the field for an extensive exploration of new forms and practices of authorship. Second, taking for granted the postmodern criticism of representation, they overcome the traditional boundary between fiction and reality in order to focus anew on the operative force of narratives. The hybrid status of artists’ novels is moreover intrinsically linked to the writing practices from which they emerge: collective writing, appropriation, collage, and the mixing of traditional literary genres are common strategies in this field. Exploring territories at the crossroads of visual arts and literature, artists' novels thus calls for a transdisciplinary perspective from which it becomes possible to apprehend fully their singularity and significance. Combining close readings of selected artists’ novels with the discussion of critical texts, we will get acquainted with the field thus opened and put to test the working hypothesis according to which such writings might constitute a genre of their own. Last but not least: when a growing number of artists are turning to writing as a extension of, or even as an alternative to their usual practice, we would like to address the following questions: Where does this desire come from? Why does writing appear so appealing to artists in the contemporary (art) world we live in? Which new possibilities can be thereby attained? |
