InhalteThis course / field trip focuses on our interactions with fluids. These fluids include the air that we are swimming in who’s movement is registered as sound, financial fluidity of property, and flow-states in the psychology of creativity often marked by the loss of a perception of time. In keeping with previous courses taught by Haseeb Ahmed and Eirini Sourgiadaki, the course consists of daily introduction to new techniques to visualize, alter, or make fiction from fluid. The results of these experiments are documented, shared, and discussed class-wide each day. The final result of this course is an online publication documenting experiences and processes and an exhibition in Zurich of works inspired by or created on the Amorgos Island later in the year.
The Greek island of Amorgos hosts this course as it does many relevant cultural, natural, and historical features for us to explore. We inhabit the island after the annual flow of tourists has ebbed and material and textual productions are supported by daily excursions unique on the Island. They include Villa Mache designed by composer Iannis Xenakis, Amorgian honey bee hives to learn about their special characteristics, and the Temple of the Water Oracle of the three oracles of Delphi and Dodoni which is now a small monastery. Lectures and focused workshops will be organized in the evenings with readings and guest speakers who may connect remotely. The Miké Hotel is the oldest hotel of the island and from a time there were no streets nor port. It will serve as our base of operations and accommodations.
Much of our work will be conducted as field work – a key concept of exploring fluidity. Additionally we ask, how can we take artworks, expected to be relatively static, from the flow of experience had while on the island. The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote, “You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you” and “Nothing endures but change.” These concepts are early articulations of the flow states we aim to examine. Other important literature we will introduce include Boris Groys’ book “In the Flow” and psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi theory of “Flow States” of mental focus.
