InhalteThis module will look at historic and contemporary examples of artists and artworks that have both endeavoured to circumvent the art object as commodity, as well as the systems of sustainability required for artists and art making to exist.

Can the degree to which the artwork can function outside of the commodity form, as opposed to simply performing an aesthetic sympathy towards non-commodification only be done through the context of its presentation and distribution, or is there still possibility for an artwork to act autonomously? Many strategies explored in this module will be rooted in examining alternative spaces and relationships to labour.

From the Artist's Placement Group to Rolling Jubilee, many contexts that seek to challenge typical expectations for artwork also assess or even destabilise the wider structure of capitalism within which artistic practice too resides.

Whilst looking at some of the histories of self-organisation, comparisons to current alternative spaces will be discussed, has the line between for profit and DIY become blurred, or was that line even there? What are the traditional routes out of art school from hyper commercial to total refusal - are there any shared agendas for the artwork within these routes, and if so which options hold the most hope for the work?
